Almost everyone’s first panic attack is triggered by an unusual bodily sensation.Anxiety related bodily sensations usually arise out of the blue and trigger intense confusion and fear.Common bodily sensations people report are a pounding heart, tightness of chest or throat, shortness of breath, a dizzy spell, and pins and needles. Whatever the sensation, it is alarming and you react with fear as you dread something bad is about to happen to your body. You might wonder, “is this a heart attack?”
If you continue to overreact with fear and confusion to the sensations you feel, your body’s fight or flight response mechanism is switched on. This is the biological mechanism that is designed to keep you safe from real threats like being chased by a lion. It is the mixture of this biological mechanism with your not knowing what is happening to you, that triggers a FULL BLOWN panic attack.
Eventually the waves of panic subside once the fight or flight response deactivates. The problem is, you still feel totally freaked out by what just happened and very much on edge because of all the chemicals that were released during the panic attack. This feeling of sensitization and general anxiety can last for hours after a panic attack.
It is now the fear of another panic attack (fear of fear) that keeps you trapped in an anxious state of mind. You think avoidance is the best way to prevent further panic attacks, and that leads you to avoid situations or places that might trigger another episode.
Because you are constantly on the look out for the next panic attack, your body stays anxious and sensitized. This tension creates, yes you guessed it, more anxious bodily sensations, looping you back to stage 1. The panic loop is now established.
You can see from the above example how one incident of a panic attack can trap a person into a continuous loop of panic and anxiety. This loop can last weeks or years, depending on the help a person receives.
What I teach is how to short-circuit the panic loop after the very first step so the panic loop is immediately broken.
This is the key factor that makes the difference between those who fully eliminate panic attacks from their lives and those who do not. It is when the individual no longer fears the thought of having a panic attack.
This may seem like a simplified and obvious observation but give it careful consideration. The one thing that has you searching for a solution to anxiety and panic attacks this very moment is the fear of having another one.
The first time a person experiences a panic attack it can feel like their world is falling down around them. Nowhere feels safe as the anxiety becomes like a stalker lurking in the background.

In at number 1 as the most common symptom of anxiety is the racing or pounding heartbeat (palpitations). Palpitations are short, abrupt periods in which the heart suddenly starts beating fast. If you’re in a sensitive state, this can ring alarm bells because you fear a sudden heart attack. The more you panic, the faster the heart beats. It’s therefore understandable why many people in this situation jump to conclusions and dash to the hospital ER for medical help.
The next most worrying sensations in relation to the heart are ‘missed heartbeats.’ The medical term for missed heartbeats is extra systoles. A missed heartbeat usually involves an extra beat between two normal beats. Given the pause that follows this premature beat, it seems as if one beat was missed.
The New England Journal of Medicine recently published a study by Dr. Harold Kennedy. He found that healthy people with frequent irregular heartbeats appear to be no more prone to heart problems than the average person. The majority of even the healthiest people experience palpitations, missed beats, or pounding in the chest. When someone experiences high anxiety or panic, it’s very common for that person to feel light-headed or dizzy. This sensation is alarming becauseit makes you feel very vulnerable. If you’re alone, you might fear falling unconscious with no one to look after you. Or if the sensation happens in public,you might feel feelings of vulnerability while surrounded by strangers. The dizziness often felt during an episode of anxiety is caused by increased respiration. People tend to over breathe (hyperventilate) when they’re anxious, whichcan lead to dizziness or light-headedness.
Dizziness can also be triggered by pressure to perform in certain situations. It’s very uncommon for a person to faint when feeling anxious or threatened. This is because fainting is the result of low blood pressure. When we faint, our bodies fall to the ground. This allows blood to be supplied easily to the brain, a clever safety mechanism. When you feel anxious, your blood pressure goes up, not down. Hence, fainting is unlikely because your brain has plenty of blood supply.
It’s common for people with anxiety to mention fears about their breathing. Some feel that their breathing is very labored and shallow. These fears are almost always accompanied by a tight sensation in the chest or throat area.
A frequent complaint from people experiencing this sensation is worry that they’re not getting enough oxygen or that they might stop breathing altogether. They feel forced to take conscious control of their breathing. The chest or throat tightness that causes uncomfortable or shallow breathing is very common. It’s actually the chest and throat muscles that are tense. If this happens to you, it gives you the false impression that you’re not breathing correctly or getting enough air.
This can lead to panic and light-headedness, which confirms your fears of not getting enough air. You can then see how a cycle of anxiety begins as one fearful sensation feeding off another. The breathing fear comes from feeling uncomfortable in that area and then having anxious thoughts about suffocating or fainting from lack of oxygen. Don’t let it worry you. Believe me, you could spend every minute of the next ten years worrying that you’ll stop breathing, but in reality you won't. When panic attacks begin, people often feel a tingling sensation in their body. The medical term for this is paresthesia. More generally known as the feeling of pins and needles, it’s a sensation of tingling, pricking, or numbness of the skin, and it has no apparent long-term physical effect. Paresthesia is most commonly felt in the hands, arms, mouth, and feet. Don’t be alarmed—this is perfectly natural to experience in connection with high anxiety. It is part of the fight or flight response.
During a panic attack, some people are prone to believe they’re going to lose control. This feared loss of control can be physical (i.e., that all your vital organs will completely lose the run of themselves and descend into chaos) or emotional/mental (i.e., that you’ll lose your grip on reality). Those who hate social embarrassment tend to suffer from this fear the most. The feared loss of control can range from screaming in public to picking up a knife and killing the nearest and dearest person to you. Put your mind at rest! As scary as those thoughts may be, you’re not going to commit any of these acts. The reason you experience those thoughts is because your body feels out of control. Your mind thinks that if your body is out of control, it is next on the list.
The sensation of unreality is depersonalization or derealization. Many people who experience panic attacks and general anxiety become distressed by this sensation and feel they may be losing their minds. They report feeling disconnected, as if their world has become nothing more than a projection of a film. This sensation ends as soon as the person’s anxiety level is reduced. You have to trust me on that. No harm has been done to your mind, nor is it a sign of some serious problem. Use Panic Away to end this sensation by quickly reducing general anxiety.
